Truth or Dare?
After Sastre won on the Alpe, I kept remembering all those interviews and quotes over the years from Bjarne about how Carlos is his main man and Carlos is so great. It got me thinking, such hype from the boss yet this guy really hasn't done much. Even in the last days of Lance, Carlos was meant to be the big CSC lead man yet never really fired. I was waiting for Carlos to fall by the wayside, Alpe d'Huez was the first time he raised his head and I was sure it was a cameo appearance.
Even I was so optimistic, I thought it would be an Australian double down the Champs Élysées, Cadel in yellow and Robbie to get the stage win - a definite F.U. by the Aussies to the cycling world. But it's not to occur. Watching the ITT today I can't say what happened, yes Carlos rode well (especially for a guy who hates wearing the skin tight 1 piece), but Evans just never got going. But he didn't crash or hit the wall, he kept rolling on at a constant pace but obviously not fast enough. The experts targeted fatigue and no team support for 3 weeks as the answer - dunno about that, up to him rolling down the ramp everyone was singing his praise - even Lance found time to text his pick for the yellow.
Blazin' Saddles offers some ideas for the next 24 hours -maybe some wishful thinking for those people Down Under.
